Our Circuit Mission Project for 2019/20 is Creation Wise
Our project this year is about actions rather than fund-raising. We’re asking our churches and individual members to think about the environmental crisis and to get involved in action to lessen human negative impact on species and planet. At least one of our churches is already signed up to the Eco-Church scheme and this is one way to get ideas for prayer, study and action.
Action for Creation is something we can all get involved with as individuals, but the aim is also that we get active together as a congregation, and that we link with other churches and agencies in our communities who are already active in the environment, or who are interested in getting involved with us.
This project presents a challenge to us to look at our buildings and church grounds in a different way, and invites us to become creative in all kinds of ways – in worship, in everyday life, in how we use our resources.
Christmas is maybe a good time to think about what we can do, and don’t forget to make a few environmental New Year resolutions too!
Food – why not make an effort to ensure that the things you eat are, so far as possible: Local, Organic, Animal-friendly, and Fairtrade (The LOAF Principles!)
Presents – instead of buying something for those people who are impossible to buy for what about an ‘Alternative Present’ – many charities now do them, including our own Relief and Development Charity ‘All We Can’. And think how you wrap any present – fancy paper that’s not recycleable or brown paper (recycleable), or fabric with a pretty ribbon bow (re-usable)?
Travel – going away somewhere or popping off to visit family? How about ‘offsetting’ your travel, i.e. giving to a tree-planting charity such as ‘Size of Wales’ or the Woodland Trust. There are various Carbon Calculators online which can help you work out amounts – or just make a donation according to what you can afford or feel right!
Waste – try to avoid anything that is plastic and throwaway e.g. Crackers with novelty gifts – you can get ‘Real Christmas Crackers’ with joke, hat and a bag of chocolate buttons instead; recycle everything you can, (note that Environment Centre, and other venues, can take items such as crisp packets, bread bags, toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, biscuit wrappers and spray trigger heads); and maybe when you’re out and about pick up one or two items of litter and dispose appropriately.
